American Apparel is not afraid of causing controversy when it comes to advertising. The company has been posting topless ads since the early 2000s, has used porn stars in their ads, and added pubic hair to their mannequins. Now, the company is drawing attention to the fact that their clothes are sweatshop free and made in the USA by plastering "Made in Bangladesh" over a woman's breasts. According to the text on the bottom of the ad, the woman, Maks, is a merchandiser who has been working with the company since 2010. The company writes: Born in Dhaka, the capitol of Bangladesh, Maks vividly remembers attending mosque as a child alongside her conservative Muslim parents. Already the ad is being criticized for branding its employees and not their clothing, as well as continuing their male-gaze-fueled advertisement.
